Gong Gong Gong in 2020!
喂喂喂! Dear fans and friends of Gong Gong Gong,
Happy New Year, and thanks for supporting us and sharing our music in 2019! We’re sending you this short recap of last year, and update on our plans for 2020, because you bought our music on Bandcamp. Think of it as a very occasional Gong Gong Gong newsletter, which we’ll probably send out a couple of times a year.
2019 was a big year for 工工工, with Phantom Rhythm 幽靈節奏 finally getting released after two years of hard work. We toured Europe and China, played SXSW, performed at PS1 MoMA in New York, and have already started working on our second album for Wharf Cat.
We also made our first music video, for Ride Your Horse 騎你的馬. It was shot in Beijing, and gives a look at what makes the city so weird and special. (A horse ran down the street while we were filming).
At its core, Gong Gong Gong is a duo, but we love to do special collaborations with our friends as well. This past August, we played a wild version of our album closer, Sound of Love 愛歌 with our favourite guitarist in China, Li Jianhong. You can check out a live video for that, here.
Both of these videos include lyrics translations in English and Japanese. If you wondered what Tom is singing about, have a look on Bandcamp for the complete English and Japanese translations.
Phantom Rhythm made it onto a bunch of year-end lists, including Aquarium Drunkard, Loud And Quiet, Raven Sings the Blues, The Wire, and the CBC. Our label, Wharf Cat, is down to the last few copies of the first vinyl pressing, so make sure you order an LP if you want one!
We've got more music coming out soon in 2020. First off, we'll be putting out a special collaborative tape for our Rhythm n' Drone series, this one recorded in Copenhagen with our friends Joakim Wei Bernild and Anton Rothstein from the bands First Hate and Marching Church. If you wondered what Gong Gong Gong would sound like with actual percussion, you’ll like this one.
There will be more announcements in the next few months, but we're looking forward to playing across China, Taiwan, Japan, Europe, the UK, and North America in 2020!
As always, if you think we should play in your city or want to take us out to eat some good food, send us an email or contact us on Instagram or Facebook. Thanks to everyone who already got in touch. We'll do our best to make it out, and are working hard at planning everything now.
Happy New Year from 工工工!
